Peter van Bodegom

Hoogleraar Milieubiologie, Universiteit Leiden

Ik heb gewerkt aan een aantal universiteiten in Nederland (Wageningen Universiteit, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, Universiteit Leiden), altijd op het snijvlak van biologie/ecologie en het milieu.
Ik gebruik een combinatie van modellen, experimenten en grote data-analyses om de interacties tussen organismen en hun leefomgeving te begrijpen en te voorspellen.
In toenemende mate bestudeer ik ook in de wisselwerking tussen mens en de natuur. Hoe beïnvloedt de mens de natuur, maar ook vice versa. Hoe is de mens afhankelijk van de diensten die de natuur levert?

Peter van Bodegom is professor Environmental Biology at the Institute of Environmental Sciences, Leiden University. Following a MSc in soil science, he got a PhD (cum laude) on methane emissions from rice paddies, after which he worked on predicting vegetation and crop changes under influence of climate change. He joined Leiden University in 2015. With his department, he investigates urgent challenges in understanding and quantifying the impacts of human influences on nature and biodiversity and the needs of society for natural resources. He is education director of the transdisciplinary MSc Governance of Sustainability and coordinator of the Greenport hub of the Leiden-Delft-Erasmus Center for Sustainability to stimulate the transition to circular and sustainable horticultural and agricultural food systems.
