Wetenschappers en verantwoordelijkheidsdragers voor de volksgezondheid zijn daar blij mee. Ze vragen al jaren om een dergelijk volksgezondheidsbeleid dat bovendien ook wordt aanbevolen door de Europese tak van de Wereldgezondheidsorganisatie (WHO) en nadrukkelijk wordt gesteund door belangrijke Europese consumentenverenigingen.
De ondertekenaars van deze oproep willen eraan herinneren dat alleen de wetenschap de beleidsbeslissingen op het gebied van volksgezondheid zou moeten leiden en dat de keuze van het ene geharmoniseerde voedingswaarde-etiket op de voorkant van de verpakking voor Europa aan deze ene eis moet voldoen en niet aan de belangen van de economische actoren (fabrikanten, detailhandelaars of specifieke voedingssectoren) of staten die hen verdedigen.
Nutri-Score is al door meerdere Europese landen goedgekeurd (Frankrijk, België, Duitsland, Spanje, Luxemburg, Nederland) en wordt momenteel besproken als het systeem dat op EU-niveau zou kunnen worden goedgekeurd op grond van de wetenschappelijke achtergrond ervan.
Sinds de Nutri-Score in het middelpunt van de Europese discussies is komen te staan, is een aantal politieke organen, media en sociale netwerken echter het toneel geworden van felle aanvallen en lastercampagnes.
Die zijn erop gericht om de Nutri-Score in diskrediet te brengen en te weerleggen. De aanvallen komen niet met constructieve kritiek om mogelijke verbeteringen van het bestaande instrument voor te stellen (zoals verwacht mag worden), maar verspreiden juist valse beweringen zonder enige wetenschappelijke onderbouwing. Hun doel is Nutri-Score te verwerpen of van zijn doelstellingen af te leiden. Deze aanvallen gaan gepaard met voorstellen voor zogenaamde 'neutrale' alternatieven (zoals het NutrInform batterijsysteem voorgesteld door Italië en een aantal agro-voedingslobby's) of de bewering dat de informatie op de huidige etikettering op de achterkant van verpakkingen afdoende is, en hebben tot doel het besluitvormingsproces van de oprichting van een geharmoniseerd front-of-pack voedingswaarde-etiket voor Europa te blokkeren en te voorkomen dat Nutri-Score het door de EU gekozen model wordt.
De ondertekenaars van deze oproep willen eraan herinneren dat Nutri-Score - dat ontwikkeld werd door academische onderzoekers zonder belangenconflicten - het enige nutritionele etiket op de voorkant van de verpakking in Europa is dat door talrijke wetenschappelijke studies werd onderzocht. De resultaten daarvan werden gepubliceerd in internationale wetenschappelijke tijdschriften op basis van collegiale toetsing. Ze tonen aan dat de Nutri-Score doeltreffend en relevant is voor de consument en de volksgezondheid en dat het instrument beter werkt dan andere die in andere landen worden gebruikt of door pressiegroepen worden ondersteund. Dit uitgebreide onderzoekswerk wordt in de bijgevoegde tekst gepresenteerd en dient als ondersteuning voor deze verklaring van wetenschappers uit heel Europa waarin zij de Europese Unie vragen niet toe te geven aan pressiegroepen en Nutri-Score zo spoedig mogelijk goed te keuren als een geharmoniseerd en verplicht logo voor Europa in het belang van de consument en de volksgezondheid.

Nieuw Frans onderzoek laat zien dat de Nutri-Score een positief effect heeft op het koopgedrag van de consument. In dit onderzoek zegt 57% van de ondervraagde consumenten dat ze hun aankoopgedrag hebben veranderd door de aanwezigheid van het voedselkeuzelogo. De zeven landen waar de Nutri-Score nu op vrijwillige basis wordt toegepast op producten zijn allemaal van mening dat de Nutri-Score het meest duidelijk is voor de consument en de consument helpt om makkelijker de juiste keuze te maken. Landen zoals Italië en Zweden staan niet achter de Nutri-Score. Deze twee landen hebben al hun eigen labels, namelijk de NutrInform en Keyhole-logo.
Ook foodwatch neemt deze oproep mee in de al langer lopende Nutri-Score campagne, waarmee de organisatie de EU tot Europabrede (verplichte) invoering van het voedselkeuzelogo wil dwingen.
De nodige wetenschappers zijn stiekem politici. Of ondernemer natuurlijk.
Ik vind het altijd weer zo bijzonder bewonderenswaardig hoe ze die 289 wetenschappers bij elkaar gerommeld krijgen. Misschien moeten die twee uit Nederland ons eens vertellen hoe dat nou precies gegaan is en in welke mate ze zich in het onderwerp verdiept hebben.
Arnold, hoe definieer jij de termen die er volgens jou toe doen in dit kader ('onafhankelijke wetenschappers', 'zo min als mogelijk bewerkt', 'zo natuurlijk mogelijk op een gezonde bodem geteeld' en 'zeker niet kunstmatig geknutseld')?
Mag een 'onafhankelijke wetenschapper' nooit in haar leven iets onderzocht hebben in opdracht van het bedrijfsleven? Zijn mijn aardappels nog 'zo min als mogelijk bewerkt' als ik ervoor kies om ze te schillen? Als ik mijn moestuin schoffel, zijn mijn bietjes dan nog 'zo natuurlijk mogelijk geteeld'? Als ik pommes duchesse maak van jouw aardappels, ben ik dan 'kunstmatig aan het knutselen'?
