Wellicht leuk. Beste maatschappelijke klimaatverhaal is het boerenverhaal. va ca 44 min. 50 sec. Kan uiteraard ook helemaal kijken.

Imaka, RUG Groningen.

On Oktober 25th is our next IMAKA lecture. Dr. Femke de Jong will give a lecture on the measurements of ocean circulation and their variability.

Summary
The Atlantic ocean circulation consist of a complicated system of smaller and larger currents that together transports large amounts of heat northwards. This heat transport affects weather in western Europe, but also conditions in the Arctic Ocean and melting of Greenland's calving glaciers. The strength of the ocean circulation shows natural variability, but is also predicted to decrease in the future as a result of climate change. In this talk Femke de Jong will go into why and how we directly measure the Atlantic ocean circulation and what we are learning about the processes responsible for its variability.

About our speaker
Dr. Femke de Jong is a researcher at the Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research at Texel. She received a Vidi Talent grant from the Dutch Research Council in 2018 with which she was able to continue her study of the 'engines' of the world. She regularly embarks on research vessels such as RV Pelagia to sample the subarctic waters off Greenland's south coast.

Time and date
The lecture (in English) will be Monday 25 October 2021, from 19:30 CEST and will last about 1 hour. Afterwards there is plenty of room for questions in the chat, of which we will make a selection and read out. The lecture will not be recorded.

Registration
This lecture will be in English. In order to participate, please register yourself via this link: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfczHmUMLqfko_0OMIh3tkTekJysY51EM9dkqUyHqBn6AQdyA/viewform?usp=sf_link.
This form also includes some further technical details. The log in link and further instructions will be emailed to you on the morning before the lecture. The lecture starts at 19:30 CE(S)T and lasts until 20:30, after which there is room for questions via the chat. The lecture will not be recorded. After the lecture we will delete all the stored registration data.

Until 2030, G20 countries are planning to use 240% more coal, 57% more oil and 71% more natural gas as would be in line in reaching the 1.5 degree Paris Climate Accord . Hoe dan?
